Do I need to install an app to use ShareLAN?

No. ShareLAN runs entirely in your browser. Open the page on two devices connected to the same Wi-Fi and they can send files to each other.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Files travel directly device-to-device over your local network using WebRTC. The server only relays the initial connection handshake and never sees your files.

How do I know which device is which?

Each device is labeled with its local IP address on the network, so you can tell exactly which computer or phone you are sending to.
